This gifset is a bit misleading. It doesn’t mention the part where he said he came to really appreciate the original series as an adult and has since watched all of the episodes. The writers he worked with are huge Star Trek fans. His philosophy was to try and make the movie accessible to everyone while still acknowledging the die hard fans. Whether he succeeded is a subjective opinion that you all can make on your own, but I think some folks are being unreasonable by judging him for the opinions of his youth. While I was a huge TNG fan as a kid, I also found the original series hard to watch until later in life.

I have seen every single episode and movie of every Star Trek series ever made. I think the reboot was amazing and will bring a lot of new fans to the source material. Movies are supposed to be more spectacle and TV shows usually delve deeper into philosophy. I guess I’m hoping the success of the movies may lead to more television series so we can have the best of both worlds.

Okay, I will fess- Star Trek was that weird show my older brother liked when I was a kid, and I wasn’t a fan. Until I watched the original movie, and I dunno, something “clicked” for me and I started really liking it. Next Gen came out when I was in junior high, and that’s probably the series I identify with most, it’s sort of “my” Star Trek, the way TOS was my brother’s.

Numbers stations are mysterious shortwave radio channels of indiscernible origin that exist in countries all across the world and have been reported since World War 1. They are identifiable by the unusual contents of their broadcasts: seemingly random sequences of numbers, words, letters, tunes, and Morse code, usually spoken by artificially generated voices of women and children.

The most common theory regarding the purpose of these bizarre stations is that they’re used by governments the world over to secretly transmit encrypted commands and messages to spies. That said, even though numbers stations have been discovered all over the globe and in any number of different languages, no government has ever officially acknowledged their existence. While the espionage theory is a logical one, with no official confirmation of their purpose the jury is still out.

One particularly odd station, UVB-76, has existed since the late 1970s and has broadcast a simple, repetitive buzzing tone 24 hours a day ever since. On very rare occasions, however, listeners have reported a Russian voice interrupting the buzz to read out sequences of numbers and words, always in a consistent format — this happened once in 1997, once in 2002, once in 2006, 56 times in 2010, and 14 in 2011. As with all numbers stations, its true purpose is and will probably remain unknown, but the increase in frequency of whatever it’s doing is certainly odd.

You can listen to well over 100 recordings of numbers stations for free on archive.org but be forewarned that they’re all kind of, well, eerie. They feel like something you shouldn’t be listening to, which stands to reason since apparently you’re not supposed to know they exist.

my grandfather ran a cheetah sanctuary in south africa and he’d just lie with them and sleep among them and they’d rub against him and chirp at him they’re big fucking babies

Another Fun Fact: Cheetah’s are incredibly nervous animals. One of the (many) reason’s they’re going extinct is that cheetah’s are so sensitive and nervous, some of them are literally too nervous to breed. Other’s will breed, but stress themselves out so much, they’ll loose their cubs.

So zoo’s with breeding program’s had to figure out how to make Cheetah’s comfortable enough to first of all, get laid and secondly - not spazz themselves into miscarrying.

So what’d they do?
They gave the cheetah’s their very own Service Dogs!

The dogs make them feel safe, protected and secure!

Look, I get that there’s supposed to be a whole “Don’t forget to stop and smell the roses!” thing going on with this, but every time I see it, it feels like there’s this shaming going on of the people who didn’t, COULDN’T stop.

Let’s be honest - how many people have jobs or bosses where they could turn up 10, 15, 20 minutes late and say,

“Well there was this incredible violinist in the subway…”

Nope, probably not gonna fly.

Hell, I live somewhere that the only form of public transportation is the bus, and if you miss it you have to wait a full hour for the next one, and then it will probably take at least a half hour to get where you were going. If I have to be somewhere via public transit, I really, truly, honestly do NOT have time to stop and smell the roses (or listen to the violinist,) however much I may regret that fact.

I get that maybe the point was supped to be, “gee isn’t sad that modern life is so rushed and hurried,” but every time I see it, instead it comes across as, “gee isn’t it sad that these people are such uncultured swine that they don’t appreciate this.”
